Upon successful completion of this lesson, the participant will be able to:

Review and understand the bases and parameters of government and personal liability in the context of fire management.

Understand the differences between negligence, gross negligence, and accidents, and what type of action constitutes each.

Learn how to protect yourself and the government from civil and criminal liability by following the 10 standard firefighting orders, mitigating the 18 watch out situations, utilizing all the fire behavior knowledge the agency has developed, and keeping firefighter safety first and foremost in your decision-making.

Understand what decisions may be exempt from liability under the discretionary function exception to the FTCA.

Understand the ABSOLUTE necessity for documentation in every decision you make.

Develop a decision-making and situational safety net for government employees through documentation, acting within your job description and carrying out decisions and work in a responsible manner.
