Unit 2 Policy and Planning
Introduction
The pre-course work for Unit 2 consists of reading and answering some questions. Internet access is required for some of the reading and all of the questions. The time required for all four lessons is approximately 5.5 hours.
The Policy and Planning Unit consists of four lessons:
- Enabling Laws and Authorities;
- Fire Management Policy;
- Fire Management Planning;
- Interdisciplinary Teams.
Enabling Laws and Authorities requires internet access and takes about 1 hour to complete. Enabling Laws and Authorities Unit, the participant will be able to identify federal and state laws that give agencies authority for fire management on agency lands.
Fire Management Policy requires internet access and takes about 2 hours to complete.
Upon completion of the Fire Management Policy Unit, the participant will be able to:
- Locate useful policy information using the NIFC web site;
- Locate and reference the Interagency Strategy for the Implementation of Federal Wildland Fire Management Policy; and,
- Describe changes in implementation of the federal fire management policy.
Fire Management Planning requires internet access and takes about 2 hours to complete. Upon completion of the Fire Management Planning Unit, the participant will be able to:
- escribe how fire management plans are developed and tiered to land management plans;
- Discuss their agency's guidance on Land Use Plans;
- Discuss the NEPA process and the relationship to land use, fire and other program plans;
- Identify key fire management plan components necessary to meet land management and preparedness objectives; and,
- Actively participate in classroom discussions on fire management planning.
Interdisciplinary Teams does not requires internet access and takes about 0.5 hours to complete.
Upon completion of the Interdisciplinary Teams Unit, the participant will be able to actively participate in class discussions on interdisciplinary teams and receive answers to questions.
